The parish has been supporting a range of charities for many years adn has reviewed its cuases for support with effect from January 2018. Each cause promoted and receives a share in part of the parish’s voluntary income. Once approved, each project will run for three years with an opportunity to apply for a further period of support. From January 2018, we have 4 approved charities each having a quarter share of the parish allocation.
We have a clear set of criteria, approved by the PCC, relating to the projects we can support. Essentially, the support we offer must make a difference, have a Christian element, be aligned to the Parish Vision and be capable of engaging the parish in its work.
The Charity Support Group exists to identify projects and to oversee them on behalf of the PCC. Our current causes are below.
- Amaha We Uganda (formerly Hope for Uganda) - now constituted as a stand alone charity. Our connection arose following a visit to Uganda back in 2005 where financial, training and development support is given to groups of women and street kids. Our support for this charity has been renewed to run until the end of 2020.
- Besom Woking: In line with our current Vision and the needs of our community, there is a focus on local needs which has led to the approval of supporting Besom Woking from January 2018.
- CMS Devonport: via the Church Mission Society, from January 2018 we have agreed to support a missionary Ruth Sayers who is working in the deprived district of Devonport in Plymouth.
- A Local Community fund which has been set up to provide support for local charities .... please see linked page for more details.
Other projects now completed have involved work with Eikon, North West Surrey Samaritans, Woking Hospice, training a worker for Macmillan Nurses and building a school at Illamo in Kenya, TEAR fund working in Burundi and Children in Distress.
Over the last five years, we have provided financial support in excess of £250,000 to these various causes, as well as time and commitment from members of the congregation. If you would like to make any specific donations in support of these, please contact our Treasurer or if you are interested in offering time or resources to help, please contact the respective project leaders or Robert Hewitt.
